Eric Lefkofsky does not enjoy starting new companies. The entrepreneur has taken many startups public while becoming wealthy and establishing his reputation as one of the great tech founders. However, Lefkofsky’s life changed when his wife was diagnosed with cancer. To help adjust to the shock of his wife’s diagnosis, Lefkofsky helped develop Tempus, which uses data to help with cancer treatments. Tempus uses machine learning to help understand a patient’s diagnosis. Tempus then creates a treatment plan to help fight the tumor. Lefkofsky feels that Tempus is a symbol of a technology shift within healthcare and learn more about Eric.
Lefkofsky is committed to using millions of dollars from his own finances to help Tempus, which Lefkofsky feels gives him an advantage over other competitors who constantly need financing. While Lefkofsky doesn’t really enjoy starting companies, Tempus was created because there was a problem that lacked a solution. As Lefkofsky went with his wife to her treatments, he met with doctors and wondered why they didn’t use data that could help their decision making and Eric’s lacrosse camp.
Tempus has formed numerous partnerships with different healthcare organizations, including The University of Michigan, Northwestern University, and The Mayo Clinic. Tempus looks at the patient’s clinical and molecular information, then sends the results to the doctors. Doctors are then able to analyze the mutations of the patient and what treatment options would be the most beneficial. While it will take time to determine Tempus’s real significance, the company has been endorsed by several top cancer clinics.
Lefkofsky is also a founding partner of Lightbank, a venture fund that invests in disruptive technologies. Lefkofsky has also helped found Groupon, Uptake Technologies, Echo Global Logistics, and InnerWorkings.
Lefkofsky also established the Lefkofsky Family Foundation with his wife to help start initiatives that help people in different communities. Lefkofsky earned his degree from The University of Michigan and received his Juris Doctor from The University of Michigan Law School.
